About Roy-El Farm

Roy-El Farm has been a cornerstone of the Morgan horse community since the 1940s. Founded by Roy and Elberta Honstein, the farm was built on a deep love of horses and a commitment to excellence that has guided its success for generations.

That passion was passed to their daughter, Debbie, who took the reins and developed Roy-El Farm into an exceptional breeding, training, and boarding program. Under her leadership, the farm owned and stood Eethree Supreme, the #1 Morgan Hunter Sire in the nation in 1997, along with many other nationally recognized stallions throughout the years. In recognition of its lasting contributions to the Morgan breed, Roy-El Farm was inducted into the American Morgan Horse Association Breeders Hall of Fame in 2012.

Today, the Roy-El legacy continues with third-generation horsewoman Erlene Smythe, Debbie's daughter, who was born and raised at Roy-El Farm in northern New Mexico. Immersed in horsemanship from the start, Erlene earned her first Reserve National (now World) Championship at just six years old in Western Walk/Jog aboard Sugar Run Sky Penny. She has since achieved success at the local, regional, and national levels in every seat, while training champion horses and riders across disciplines.

Erlene’s depth of knowledge is shaped by rare opportunities to learn from and train alongside Hall of Fame Morgan and Saddlebred trainers, reiners, Olympic dressage riders and instructors, draft horse trainers working both single and teams, ropers, and over-fences professionals. Having worked with a wide variety of breeds from coast to coast, she brings a unique blend of experience, adaptability, and enthusiasm to every horse and rider she trains.

Roy-El Farm remains dedicated to producing well-rounded horses and confident riders, honoring decades of tradition while continuing to evolve with the future of horsemanship.
